Today, Episode 61! Today, Episode 61! We talk again about the trolly paradox, and the need to program autonomous to mirror various cultures’ social norms, conventions, and expectations; GM’s Cruise Automation has a small problem in that it’s not so good at detecting pedestrians (oops); and, we discuss VW’s strategy towards besting Tesla at it’s own game… by 2020.

It’s #FridayPollDay!

Today’s question:

An must hit one of the following; which should it be?
A. An elderly person
B. A child
C. A non-convicted criminal
D. Nobody (kills passengers)

Head on over to @AutonomousHoag and cast your vote!

We revisit the Trolly Paradox. Again.

It turns out that western and eastern cultures have different opinions on the question of whether an autonomous car should hit a child or an elderly person. My suggestion as always? Apply local cultural values and program the car to do what a “reasonably prudent person” in that culture would do.

GM’s Cruise Automation Chevy Bolts have a hard time seeing pedestrians.

But they’re working on it. Obviously.

VW’s future plans include electricity, SUVs, and beating Tesla at it’s own game?

The promise better EVs than Tesla, at half the price. By 2020.
